God’s Promise to Abraham

(Genesis 12:3 ESV) I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

The promises that God made to Abraham when he was called to leave Haran were wonderful indeed. We see God’s provision (a land that I will show you), we see his willingness to bless (and I will bless you and make your name great so that you will be a blessing), and we see his protection (and him who dishonors you I will curse). All of these promises have one purpose is mind. Commentators agree that the statement “and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” is intended to present the purpose for all of the previous promises God made to Abraham. Scripture reveals God’s heart to bless many nations through the life and testimony of a man who believed in him.

There are several ways in which we can see that all who are believers today have been blessed through the life and testimony of Abraham. He is a patriarch of Israel through whom Jesus the Christ came to live on earth. He is also the father of those who believe through his example of faith in God. Though the focus could easily be placed on Abraham I have been thinking also on the one person who has made this possible. The one person whose heart shines through all of the historical implications and literary devices found in these accounts. Think of this, at a time when the gospel was all but lost among the nations of men, God chose a few men by which to reveal himself to all men everywhere throughout time. Abraham was part of a bigger plan. All of the blessings that he received were given for the purpose of making God known to the nations.

God has made you the light of the world. He has blessed you and lavished grace upon you so that you could be seen as a place of refuge to the weary and down trodden soul. Just as Abraham was considered God’s prophet and received grace in spite of his short comings, you have been placed on a stand to give light to all in the house. Let your light shine before others! Live for God’s pleasure and glory, serve others and do good works so that others will glorify our heavenly Father! Let this lost and dying world know that there is a way to eternal life. Let them see that there are blessings available to them if they would believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. The promises that God has made to believers today are intended to result in a testimony of his power, glory, and grace for every family of the earth. Let us live that more may worship Him! Jesus is worthy.
