Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. (John 4:34-35 ESV)
There are two kinds of food in the kingdom and two kinds of harvests. There is the food necessary for nourishing our human bodies and the harvest that correlates to producing such food. Then there is the food that nourishes that part of us that finds fulfillment in Christ. The food which fuels the fires of devotion to God. That mana from heaven that can only be experienced as we see God’s will intersecting his providence, where we know he is working and giving us the opportunity to labor for that which is truly bread. Oh the joy of seeing people come to Christ! How encouraging to know that the Spirit has marvelously given the increase and prepared a harvest for which you did not labor! One that is ready for harvest. Oh the joy of sharing the gospel! Oh the joy of knowing that you may very well be sowing a seed that will eventually bear fruit that bears witness to genuine repentance and faith in Christ! How wonderful it is to hope that those with whom you have witnessed to may join you in glory on the day of His appearing! Oh the hope of life eternal with those you shared a little time with here on earth.
Let us lift up our eyes and see that our mission field is ready for harvest. Let us not look down to our own cares and neglect the Lord’s passion for souls. Let us not look on with apathy for the plight of those who are without Christ today. Let us not look away from the desperate state of the lost because we are distracted by those things that entertain us. No, let us lift our eyes and see what our Savior sees. Let us gaze on the scarred masses of humanity and weep with compassion. Let us be compelled by that conviction that the Holy Spirit lays on our hearts of the necessity to share what we have been freely given. My beloved brothers and sisters, will you not join me in telling others about the love of Jesus? The fields are white and ready for harvest.
